In the Cover of Darkness

Murdering a city guard is a treasonous act, punishable by death.

And when Laurel Gunderson finds herself in that exact situation, she knows a quick death would be a mercy. For if the King of Axtria learned of the existence of a halfling-elf, there would be no telling what atrocity he might inflict upon her.

One action, one job, throws Laurel’s life into utter turmoil. The careful choices made throughout her life to remain a secret are at risk. There is only one option. Laurel and her closest confidant, Cole, choose to flee for their lives.

But when the open road cannot offer Laurel and Cole the sanctuary they need, they’re presented with an offer neither of them knew existed. A proposal from Laurel’s ex-lover.

A resistance is growing, gathering in the shadows across Axtria, working to undo the laws laid down. The aim is to return Axtria to a place of liberty. Something Laurel has dreamed of all her life.

Taking a stand with those who oppose Eberlim, Laurel and Cole face their greatest challenges yet. Protecting those who cannot defend themselves. Risking it all for a chance of freedom. With her life on the line, can Laurel resist the man she’s never stopped loving, to continue living a life of fear and secrets or will her heart win out?

Without risk, there is no reward.

Without the resistance, there is no future.

I really liked it and gave it four stars.

In the Cover of Darkness by Jozanne Morgan surpassed my expectations with its captivating narrative following a half-Elf concealing her identity for safety. Readers will quickly identify with Laurel's journey of healing and self-discovery, making her a relatable protagonist.

Highlighting the genuine friendship between Laurel and Cole, the book offers a refreshing departure from romantic tropes. Exploration of Laurel's relationship with Enzo also adds depth and nuance. Masterful world-building immerses readers in Axtria's enchanting magic system and captivating lore, evoking even more wonder and intrigue. Beloved fantasy tropes like found family and assassins add yet another fun layer of complexity.

While it may not resonate with all readers, the strengths certainly lie in well-crafted characters, an incredibly immersive world, and an engaging plot. The story leaves a lasting impact and certainly an enjoyable tale for any fans of enchanting adventures and compelling characters with seasoned storytelling.

If I could ask one question it would be:

What inspired you to create the world of Axtria and did any real-life experiences influence your storytelling?

A special thanks to the author in association with Love Book Tours for providing this book in return for an honest review.
